Very pedagogic
I think standard is easier for more just because I don’t think with visuals, I think with words so hitting “D” for marauder would be easier for me than “W” for marauder because there is no w in marauder. So I was able to jump into using the hotkeys for all 3 races as well as abilities, commands, units, etc. quite easily and I have all the hotkeys for all 3 races memorized now. But for instance I have a friend who would be able to use this much better than the standard and such. Very useful info.
mine is already in grid and its not the way u explain
i feel that for zerg, standard is better.
but for random or terran yes grid is good.
What I find mooooost annoying (and this is irrelevant between grid or standard layout) is that the Build button and Advanced Build Button are right next to each other – I quite frequently hit one instead of meaning the other, and then I’m like “why isn’t my hotkey working?… oh!” and waste time hitting Esc and trying again… soo frustrating and such a waste of time. I reaaaally need to practice my muscle memory and reflexes a lot more!
And possibly consider a custome layour.. 
this makes a lot more sense if you use hotkeys like:
1-OC
2-rax
3-fact
4-port
5-army1
6-army2
then, macro is 1q2qqw3w4qw
and attacking is 5t6t

wow really? those are the exact keys I use to plaqy world of warcraft.
unfotuynately I am getting to be a very, very lazy gamer and woud rather lurk people in bronze then learn to realy play as I have limtited time these days.
